The 'iCon' Collection: I Worlds, and II Home
A selection of four 'iCons' will be exhibited from November 27th 2015 at the Puhoi Art Exhibition in New Zealand.
A re-imagining, or subversion of the iPhone as a personal communication device, these iCons revisit the role of traditional eikons, as portable contemplative objects. They still the frenetic passage of redundant information through our consciousness that iPhones represent, and require us to 'con' (archaic for 'to study or know') some really significant aspects of contemporary experience. Sculpted in native New Zealand timber to the hand-held dimensions of the mobile phone, then French-polished and gilded to encase miniature paintings, these pieces are designed to have and to hold as meditative embellishments, to help free the owner from digital tyranny and to offer something different...
