As sometimes happen, this painting started with a real place, a memory of white wildflowers carpeting sparse woodland on the way to the beach, on the victorian south coast.  It then evolved into an imaginary composition, that nevertheless captures the pull of the coastal path through dense and lively vegetation, and those elegant eucalypts, to toward the air and energy of the open beach behind.

This large painting began as exploration of the form of dark, burnished rocks on a Tasmanian beach.  It evolved to include aspects of the wild estuary landscape where I saw them. There is a story element, girls row out with their dog, across the water at twilight.  Out there, there is only beauty and silence, the sound of small waves breaking, the sight of evening clouds spread out across the sky; a little freedom.

Bobbing in a small boat off the rugged southern rim of this great continent, south of Bruny, I was awestruck by the sublime visual drama of those cliffs and islands.  It felt like a rare privilege to witness the way in which they are relentlessly sculpted by massive elemental forces, which are both creative and destructive.

In 1827, 'Cradle Mountain' in Tasmania was named by explorer Joseph Fossey, who had been reminded, looking about upon arrival, of a gold prospector's cradle. The name of the mountain was an incidence of the projection of acquisitive desire onto this rough terrain.  My visual experience of the place, however, was indicative of my own historical moment.

The inspiration for this work was a wild Tasmanian coastline.  I was attracted to the ways in which the coastal vegetation was trained and sculpted into beautiful curves by the wind, and by the lustrous qualities of the winter light.

Victoria’s unique south coast is the inspiration for my painting, Prospero’s Garden. The painting provides a pathway into a place that is both wild and beautiful.
